The very character of the piece is hidden in the title of the composition: the element

“phantasmagoric”, which in its sense refers to a rapid succession

of images, sounds, colors, objects and actions that vividly affect the senses e

fantasy, is represented in music by a continuous succession and

contrasting episodes with a sometimes ironic and grotesque character, sometimes come on

more peremptory and threatening traits, at other times still pervaded by a sense of

creepy mystery.

The martial rhythm, germinating element that runs through the entire composition since

from its inception, it gradually transforms without ever stopping,

dragging the listener through musical images time after time

different, but generated by a common initial thematic element.

History
takes place in an otherworldly dimension inhabited by animals and a young man; the inhabitants who
populate this world are not aware of being different individuals but they feel one
all by themselves, they live an almost perfect existence, except that the sun is held back by ropes
who do not let him ascend to enlighten them . The Magician appears, disguised as a crow and in front
the man becomes curious, dances with him, studies him. He approaches a small chest and takes one out
book, a sword, an oboe, a mirror; continuing his dance, he shows man and animals
some wonders of the universe. All together they resume dancing happily. The Magician takes it
mirror that he gives to the man telling him not to look in the mirror but to place it next to the sun; For
magic appears a large mirror that recalls the shape of a mountain; all animals and
the man for the first time in the mirror and, with great dismay, they see that they are different from each other;
now they fear each other. Meanwhile, a dancing young woman emerges from behind the mirror
with the man. After the dance, the two realize they are alone. The Magician reappears
asks the man to choose an object in the trunk, the man chooses the oboe and hands it to the magician who
start playing it; the animals, in a sort of enchantment, follow him and, at a certain point, the
magician draws two silhouettes of the right hand on the large mirror. Night falls and everyone does
they fall asleep. Dawn returns and everyone wakes up in a new state of consciousness: now they are not afraid
more, they all dance together again in front of the mirror; The sun, however, is still held back
from the ropes, but when the man and the woman approach the mirror and place theirs together
right hand on the shapes drawn by the magician, the sun frees itself from the ropes and with its great light
bearer of truth, she leads everyone back to absolute unity, guiding them towards brotherhood and
knowledge.

In a hyperuranic context, "The Age of Aquarius" places the human being at the center of the universe and
as a guide for all living beings. Among the various elements with a strong symbolic value such as
the mirror, "great soul of the world", the hand as a symbol of being "human", and others...
we have the Sun, a symbol of truth which, at a scenographic level, is represented by the famous "sun" of
Ezio Gribaudo: an enlarged brain cell that recalls its iconographic image with great
beauty. The Sun, therefore, also as a symbol of the human mind.

History

The period of development is the end of the 19th century. The scene represents the public park of a Central European town on a day of celebration. On stage a small band....

Everyone wants to dance with the Girl: Soldier, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Colonel and General, in the hope of stealing a kiss from her. Everyone makes use of the authority sanctioned by his rank to replace the dancer who preceded him, trying, with different methods suggested by his own experience, to seduce the Maiden.

Each dance reflects, with poetry and psychological sense, the personality of the graduate on duty, from soldier to general. 

The Mystery of Malta’s Co-Cathedral

World Premiere: St John's Co-Cathedral, Valletta, Malta 24/02/2023

The idea of composing a piece of music inspired by the famous Hymn of St. John the Baptist, to be included in the concert in the Co-Cathedral of Malta dedicated to the saint, on 24 February 2023, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Malta Band Clubs Association, was suggested by Maestro Music Director Giampaolo Lazzeri.

I knew the famous hymn, as musical notes historically take their italian name from it. I listened to it several times trying to snatch some ineffable secret that would give me the inspiration to start the work. Then, I read up on the history of the Order of the Knights Hospitaller and the Co-Cathedral of Malta and saw how the two things were closely connected and linked to the history of the island; a story that began in the Middle Ages, full of adventure, mysticism, mystery, which soon directed me to a sense of "investiture" of the Knights of the Order for a noble cause.

The Co-Cathedral gave me the sensation of enclosing in a sort of triumphant celebration the greatest mysteries that came to be created throughout the history of the Order.

Listening guide

After a brief introduction, whose sonority immediately recalls a place of worship, the piece begins with the very first notes of the Hymn of St. John distinguished by the Latin text: "Ut quaent laxis" articulated by the II Horn and immediately repeated by the I Horn ; once this brief structure is finished, the enunciation is fragmented into parts that undergo harmonic and timbral variations and which, like a magic key, open doors towards an ever more mysterious dimension culminating in an extended theme of an adventurous, industrious and magical character. Once the theme is finished, after the Gong's blow, the notes of the Hymn return, but now they seem an indissoluble part of the musical journey that they themselves have generated. A new element is then enunciated which, although "relative" to the Hymn with some similar interval characteristics, appears new, sudden, noble and determined, like a sonorous mark, suggesting the "musical coat of arms" of the Knights ... Now, a theme begins with a medieval flavor: a ceremonial dance of noble "investiture" which eventually merges with the "musical coat of arms". Mysterious "doors" open again which lead us back to the previous theme, magical and adventurous, now perceived with greater integrity, at the end of which one has the impression that time contracts and the musical material merges into a triumphant celebration of the " musical coat of arms” incorporated in the Co-cathedral, shining with victory and nobility.
